"What do I pay the sitter?" has gotten more expensive to answer. Babysitting rates rose again in the past year, outpacing inflation. Here's what's fair to pay in 2026 — nationally, by city, and by how many kids you're leaving behind.
What is the average babysitting rate in 2026?
UrbanSitter’s 2026 booking data reports $26.24/hour for one child and $29.87/hour for two. These are averages from that platform, not a census of every sitter or a required rate. Agree on a price for your location, schedule and responsibilities before the booking.

What to pay for 3, 4 or 5 hours
At an agreed $20/hour for the whole booking, 3 hours costs $60, 4 hours costs $80, and 5 hours costs $100. Four and a half hours costs $90. These are arithmetic examples, not suggested market rates. If your agreed rate already includes two children, do not add another child surcharge.
What raises the rate
- More kids: add about $2–$5/hour per additional child.
- Ages: infants and multiple young children pay more than one school-age child.
- Overnights & holidays: expect a premium; New Year's Eve is the classic surge night.
- Extras: cooking, driving, bath-and-bed, or light tidying nudge it up.
- Last-minute or late-night: short notice earns a few dollars more.
